The 1908 London Games were not just the first truly global Olympics. They also stand as a downright embarrassment to the blundering Olympic grandees of today. For example, there was no trouble with the Olympic torch relay for the simple reason there wasn’t one. The whole charade of parading the flame was a ritual invented for the Nazis’s 1936 Berlin Olympics.
