Texas City Disaster [On This Day]
In 1947, America’s worst harbor explosion occurred in Texas City, Texas, when the French ship Grandcamp, carrying ammonium nitrate fertilizer, caught fire and blew up, devastating the town. Today is the 64th anniversary of the disaster. I was just 8 years old and in zone 4 when it expolded. I will never forget that day, it was burned into my mind.
