On November 10, 1969, Sesame Street premiered.  It was widely praised and was well received by parents and children.The show reached about 68% of the nation, which means 1.9 million households with 7 million children watching daily.  The show is currently in its 44th season.  If you are not familiar with the show is it an educational program using Jim Henson’s Muppets, animation, live shorts, humor and celebrity appearances.

How Sesame Street Got Started Part I

It was the first television program to include a curriculum detailed or stated in terms of measurable outcomes.  Sesame Street has won eight Grammys and over a hundred Emmys in its history—more than any other children’s show.  You can find a wiki that shows when each muppet first appeared on the show as well as detailed information about each muppet.

How Sesame Street Got Started Part II

Elmo is an extremely popular muppet on the show.  He was first introduced in season 11, but was called Baby Monster.  In season 12 he is finally called Elmo.  His puppeteer was Kevin Clash.  In 2011 the movie Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey came out and had great success.  In 2012 there were allegations of sexual relationships with under-aged boys.  The cases were thrown out July 1, 2013 according to this Daily News article.  Check out the sources and book listed below for more information.
